WELCOME TO THE LUTHERAN CHURCH IN MALAYSIA
Our Faith
The Lutheran faith and what the
Lutheran Church in Malaysia believe in
The Heart of the Lutheran Faith — A Faith of Grace
The Lutheran faith began in the 1500s with Martin Luther, who wanted to help people rediscover the core message of Christianity: that God loves us deeply and saves us through grace—not through our efforts. Lutherans believe that God’s acceptance is a gift, freely offered to all. This message is summed up in three phrases:
Grace alone – God saves because He loves.
Faith alone – We receive this gift by trusting in Jesus.
Scripture alone – The Bible is the foundation for what we believe.
Instead of seeing the Bible as a rulebook, Lutherans understand it as the story of God reaching out with love and mercy. At the center of everything is Jesus Christ—His life, His death for our forgiveness, and His resurrection that brings hope and new life.
How Lutherans Worship — God’s Promises in Word and Sacrament
Lutheran worship is built around listening to God’s Word and receiving His promises. Two practices, called sacraments**, are central:
**Visible Signs of God’s Invisible Grace
Baptism
A sign that God welcomes us into His family. Lutherans baptize infants and adults because God’s promises are for everyone, not just those who can “earn” them.
Holy Communion
Often called the Lord’s Supper, this is where Lutherans believe Jesus is truly present “in, with, and under” the bread and wine. It is not only a symbol but a moment where Christ gives forgiveness, strength, and unity.
Worship services usually include Scripture readings, preaching, prayer, music, and Communion. The goal is not ritual for ritual’s sake, but a gathering around God’s grace, comfort, and truth.
Living the Lutheran Way — Faith in Everyday Life
Lutheran faith is practical and down-to-earth. It teaches that every person has a calling, not only pastors or missionaries. Everyday work—caring for children, serving customers, teaching, cooking, or helping a neighbour—is also a way to love God and serve others.
Lutherans value:
Kindness and service to the community
Honesty and humility in faith
The freedom to ask questions and grow through learning
Compassion and justice for those in need
Though Lutheranism shares many beliefs with other Christian traditions, it stands out for its strong focus on grace, its balance of tradition and reform, and its gentle, thoughtful approach to faith. For non-believers and Christians unfamiliar with this tradition, the Lutheran message remains refreshingly simple:
You are loved.
You are forgiven.
You matter—because God says so.
The Faith of the Lutheran Church in Malaysia
We confess Jesus Christ as Lord of the Church. The Holy Spirit creates and sustains the Church through the Gospel and thereby unites believers with their Lord, and with one another in the fellowship of faith.
We hold that the Gospel is the revelation of God’s sovereign will and saving grace in Jesus Christ. In Him, the Word Incarnate, God imparts Himself to man.
We acknowledge the Holy Scriptures as the norm for the faith and life of the church. The Holy Scriptures are the divinely inspired record of God’s redemptive act in Christ, for which the Old Testament prepared the way and which the New Testament proclaims. In the continuation of this proclamation in the Church, God still speaks through the Holy Scriptures and realizes His redemptive purpose generation after generation. We accept the Apostles’, the Nicene, and the Athanasian creeds as true declarations of the faith of the Church.
We accept the Unaltered Augsburg Confession and Luther’s Small Catechism as true witnesses to the Gospel, and acknowledge as one with us in faith and doctrine all churches that likewise accept the teachings of these symbols.
We accept the other symbolic books of the evangelical Lutheran Church, the Apology of the Augsburg Confession, the Smalcald Articles, Luther’s Large Catechism, and the Formula of Concord, as further valid interpretations of the Confession of the Church.
We affirm that the Gospel transmitted by the Holy Scripture, to which the creeds and confession bear witness, is the true treasure of the Church, the substance of its proclamation, and the basis of its unity and continuity. The Holy Spirit uses the proclamation of the Gospel and the administration of the Sacraments to create and sustain Christian faith and fellowship. As this occurs, the Church fulfills its divine mission and purpose.
