LCM and the Orang Asli: A Shared Journey of Faith and Service
The Orang Asli ministry began in the 1970s through the pioneering work of a Batak Christian, Napitupulu, who married a Senoi woman and later served as a pastor under HKBP (The Lutheran Church of the Batak People in Indonesia). After his passing, the Senoi community invited the Lutheran Church in Malaysia (LCM) to continue the ministry. Since then, with the support of our overseas partners, LCM has provided funding and personnel to sustain and grow the work among the Orang Asli.
Orang Asli—meaning “original people” in Malay—is a collective term for the indigenous peoples of Peninsular Malaysia. They are commonly grouped into three main categories:
-
Semang (Negrito)
-
Senoi
-
Proto-Malay (Aboriginal Malay)
For over 40 years, LCM has been working primarily with two Orang Asli mission districts:
1. Northern District
Based in Pengkalan Hulu and surrounding areas such as Pulau Banding (Tasik Temenggor), Kg. Tebang, Kg. Kebar, and Jahai (Negrito). Congregations here include people from the Temiar, Semai, Temuan, Jakun communities, as well as ethnic groups from East Malaysia.
2. Cameron Highlands District
Most congregations in this district are among the Semai (Senoi) community.
In 2007, LCM launched “Touching Hearts”, an education sponsorship programme that provides scholarships to about 120 Orang Asli students, supporting their access to formal education and long-term community development.
Through this ministry, LCM remains committed to holistic mission—spiritual nurture, education, and community support—among the Orang Asli communities entrusted to our care.
