WELCOME TO THE LUTHERAN CHURCH IN MALAYSIA
Disaster Response Team
LCM Social Concern Committee – Disaster Response Team (SCC-DRT)
The SCC-DRT was formed in 2016 following the severe floods that hit many parts of Peninsular Malaysia in January 2015. Areas such as Kota Bharu, Penang, Tasek Temenggor, interior Kelantan, and the coastal regions of Terengganu were badly affected.
The floods displaced thousands, and many NGOs, local councils, and volunteers stepped in to provide aid. Among those affected were the Orang Asli communities in Temenggor, where rising dam waters damaged numerous homes. In response, LCM—together with the LCM Orang Asli Ministry and both local and overseas partners—helped relocate and resettle families to higher ground.
Realizing the importance of preparedness, LCM collaborated with the ELCA to organize a Disaster Preparedness Workshop in July 2016. The workshop, attended by 40 participants from FELCMS churches, laid the foundation for the creation of SCC-DRT.
A refresher training followed in November 2018, joined by 20 participants—both previous trainees and new volunteers, mainly from the KL/Selangor area. The session was co-led by two local professional disaster response organizations. From this, a small committee was formed to oversee the team’s operations.
Current Office Bearers:
Bro Yogendran – Chairperson
Ps Kuan Poy Onn – SCC Liaison / Secretary
Bro Thomas Lim – Treasurer
Plus four committee members at large
At present, SCC-DRT focuses on supporting existing agencies and NGOs in disaster relief efforts. The team’s immediate priority is to operate a soup kitchen to provide meals for victims and relief workers during the initial phase of disasters. Plans for a dedicated soup kitchen van are underway, while current efforts rely on volunteers and donated equipment.
SCC-DRT was mobilized on 14 May 2019 following an elephant rampage in Kampung Wah Lung, Tasek Temenggor—an Orang Asli outreach area—where five homes were destroyed. The team coordinated immediate food relief and initiated a fund to aid in relocation and home reconstruction, in partnership with ELCA.
Looking ahead, SCC-DRT aims to conduct more disaster preparedness training across LCM districts, equipping members with practical skills and knowledge. We pray that more will be inspired to serve as Christ’s hands and feet in times of need.
