ELCA Southeastern Synod visits LCM

to strengthen bilateral ties

In late May 2016, the Rev. Aaron Yap, Bishop of the Lutheran Church in Malaysia and the Rev. Thomas Low, the Secretary of the LCM, represented the LCM at the assembly of the Southeastern Synod of the ELCA in Atlanta, Georgia. During the course of the Synod assembly, a milestone was reached when a Partnership Agreement was signed between the LCM and the ELCA Southeastern Synod. In essence, the Agreement recognised the long involvement and partnership in ministry between the (then) ULCA and the LCM since the 50s, when American missionaries first came to work in the New Villages. This early missionary work became the seed of the Lutheran Church in Malaysia.

Three years later, Bishop Julian Gordy and a team from the ELCA Southeastern Synod visited the LCM and its ministries from 12 – 15 February 2019. The Bishop and his team members, comprising Rev. Cuttino Alexander, Frank Navratil, and Roxann Thompson, began with a briefing at the LCM HQ, and then visited several LCM Social Concern ministries in the Klang Valley and Ipoh, as well as the Orang Asli ministry in Cameron Highlands. Wherever they went, they were met with warm hospitality and great memory making moments, in the words of the guests.

As Bishop Gordy put it, “We have come to see with our eyes what we have heard with our ears.” According to Bishop Gordy, this is the team that will oversee the bilateral partnership between the Synod and the LCM.

ELCA Southeastern Synod melawat
